Little Shop of Horrors

Middle School musical

Little Shop of Horrors production

Music by Alan Menken; Book and Lyrics by Howard Ashman

Based on the cult film by Roger Corman

If you work a dead-end job in a skid row florist, and discover an exotic flesh-eating plant with surprisingly good vocal skills, why wouldn’t you name it after yourself, as heroine Audrey does, and market the hell out of it? The problem is that it doesn’t stop growing and simply can’t be relied upon to behave itself, but it does unexpectedly throw love in your direction. Add in a musical score with up-tempo numbers and a few tender ballads and you have all the ingredients for a truly quirky and loveable musical.

But it may not just be the musical warmth that wraps itself around you, as delightful and catchy as the score is. Not only are the eccentric characters onstage –  among them a sweet salesman called Seymour, an unusually attractive dentist, and a chorus-like trio of girls sounding like the archetypal girl group – in danger of being enfolded by the spiky loving arms of Audrey 11, but so might you. You need to be warned that this ever-growing plant may not understand the limits of the stage.

Our Middle School students will have so much fun with this musical mayhem, and so will you; it is true off-Broadway craziness, with some romance thrown in.
