Chicago

Senior School musical

Chicago production

Lyrics by Fred Ebb; Music by John Kander; Book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse

Original production choreographed and directed by Bob Fosse

In the pantheon of great shows staged by the Adamson Theatre Company over the past three decades, Chicago was always the one missing. But the performance rights have fallen our way at last, and the excitement is palpable for both our wonderful student performers and the directing team. It is a musical that has re-written performance records across the globe, and it’s now our turn to turn up the heat, pump up “all that jazz”, and “razzle dazzle” audiences with this gorgeous and exciting piece of pure Broadway.

This “musical vaudeville” (as the composers Kander and Ebb, who were also responsible for Cabaret, once described it) is set in 1920s Chicago, famous equally for jazz and society murders, and uses its inspired score to satirise that well known American obsession with fame and celebrity. Add in a touch of media frenzy with its manipulation of the justice system and we enter a world that may be not so unfamiliar after all.

Through one great number after another those sassy and seductive vaudevillians Velma Kelly and Roxy Hart (and others) will ask the question, who says murder’s not an art? And the answers, in music and dance, will have you captivated.
